Abstract

Adranan Island in Tual City has great potential in implementing a conservation-based educational tourism program. The tourism resources in this destination are ideal for developing the concept of sustainable educational tourism, but the involvement of tourists and the community are limited in environmental conservation. The purpose of this study to design tourism development that will be used as a conservation-based educational tourism program. The method used in this study was direct observation in the field and interviews with the Tual City Tourism Office. It was found that there are 11 types of birds, dominated bylemon bellied/white eye (Zosterops chloris) and five types of plants, dominated by pine trees (Pinus merkusii), as tourism resources. Other tourism resources include natural scenery, snorkelling or diving, fishing, and canoeing. Access to the tourist area is inadequate and lack of facilities. The results of the development in Conservation-Based Educational Tourism program at Adranan Island indicate that the development of this area has great potential to become a sustainable educational destination among environmental, economic, and infrastructure aspects. This program balances the preservation of the coastal forest and seabird habitat ecosystem with the improvement of the local community’s prosperity. Community involvement is training, management, and promotion of conservation tourism, as well as the application of zoning and environmentally friendly (eco-friendly) infrastructure, are the key for the success of the program.
