Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors influencing gender inequality in the tourism industry in West Sumatra, focusing on five main variables: gender stereotypes, pay equity, career opportunities, role balance, and women's job security. The study uses a quantitative approach with a survey method involving 168 female respondents working in the tourism sector, and multiple linear regression analysis to test the influence of each variable on gender inequality. The results show that collectively, the five variables significantly contribute to gender inequality with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.673 and a significance of 0.000. However, partially, only the variables of career opportunities (p=0.001) and job security (p=0.000) have a significant effect on gender inequality, while gender stereotypes, pay equity, and role balance do not have a significant impact. These findings underscore that gender inequality in the tourism sector of West Sumatra is more influenced by structural barriers in career access and job protection than by cultural factors alone. This study recommends the need for affirmative policies and institutional reforms to create a more fair, safe, and inclusive tourism sector for women.
