Abstract

This study examines tourist co creation behavior within regenerative tourism in Desa Wisata Hanjeli, focusing on meaningful engagement and giving-back practices. Despite increasing attention to regenerative tourism, limited research addresses tourists as active agents of regeneration in community based rural destinations. This study adopts a qualitative interpretive approach using an embedded case study and ethnographic techniques. Data were collected through in depth interviews, focus group discussions, and participant observation. The findings reveal a clear behavioral pathway in which meaningful engagement fosters emotional, cognitive, and social connections, leading to co creation behavior through active participation in local activities and interactions with the community. This engagement further evolves into giving back practices, including environmental conservation, support for local products, knowledge sharing, and digital promotion. The depth of engagement significantly influences the level of participation and contribution, forming a regenerative cycle that benefits tourists, communities, and the environment. The study contributes theoretically by integrating co creation and regenerative tourism, positioning tourists as both co creators and co regenerators who generate social and ecological value beyond experiential benefits. However, the study is limited by its context specific focus and qualitative design. Future research should explore the long term sustainability of giving back practices and apply comparative or mixed method approaches. Practically, the findings highlight the importance of designing participatory and meaningful tourism experiences that encourage active tourist involvement. Overall, this study underscores the potential of tourism as a platform for fostering regenerative outcomes through collaborative and experience based engagement.
